MATAROA IMPRESSES CRITICS
(By
“The Cynic.”)
No hack in the North Island has made greater improvement in the past few months than the Bulls owned and trained gelding Mataroa, and he will now have to be considered at Trentham next week.
Mataroa had a few races towards the end of last season, when he impressed once or twice by finishing on solidly behind the placed division, but Alf Neale did not bustle this growing Ollatrim gelding, who did not resume his racing until the end of the spring meetings.
The first glimpse of real form disclosed by Mataroa was at New Year at Marton, where he finished a fair fourth to Golden Ridge in the Ladies’ Bracelet, and that was the turning point of his career. He was fourth again on the second day of the meeting, and his next appearance was at Pahiatua, where he ran home fast into second place behind Dancing Flame. Improved by that race, Mataroa finished too well for Lustral on the second day over seven furlongs, and so scored his first victory. This paved the way for his double at Woodville, where he won the two highweight events in impressive fashion. Mataroa was very unlucky to be beaten in the Victory Handicap at Wanganui at his next outing, when he was finishing all over the deadheaters Red Witch and Morning Flight, two hacks who have shown good class in the past month or two. On Saturday at Bulls Mataroa bore cut his good form with his most impressive success to date, a long, sustained run carrying him to victory over that good class filly Sudan, who had a pull of six pounds in the weights. Mataroa has been entered for the £5OO Champion Hack Cup at Trentham next week, and, though he is now fairly well up in the weights, this race is not beyond him. Backers must be guided by form, and 'Mataroa’s form is good. In his'last six starts he has had four wins, a second and a third. Attracted Attention. Settlement’s win on Saturday at Motukarara was very impressive. This Night Raid gelding has been making gradual improvement since having a lengthy spell earlier in the season, and "has furnished into a solid four-year-old with every prospect of holding his own when elevated to open company. Consistent Filly. Great Flight is one of the few of Magnus’s progeny racing, and her good form has suggested that the loss of the Stonyhurst horse is more serious than at one time thought. Great Flight has not run a bad race since she opened her career, and her four ■wins have alb indicated- stamina as well as speed. Stayed On. Nolana made her reappearance on Saturday after a spell after an operation for throat trouble, and ran what was probably her best race, especially for staying on. In many of' her previous efforts she could always be depended to show plenty of pace, but stopped badly after about five furlongs, but on Saturday she completed her six furlongs task in a resolute manner, and had Great Flight doing her best to head her off. Nolana‘is another of Night Raid’s breed from a Sunny Lake mare, and although now in her sixth year, she may collect a winning stake before the end of the season. Carterton Prospect. Galteemore ran a great race in the Rangitikei Cup on Saturday, and his turn appears to be at hand. He is engaged in the Wairarapa County Cup on Saturday. Good Buy. Mr H. E. Tancred paid a very high price for a two-year-old when he went to 7000gns for the Bulandshar colt High Caste, bue he has substantially recouped himself as the result of High Caste’s two wins—the second division of the Alma Stakes and the V.R.C. Sires’ Produce Stakes. So far, over £2700 has been returned in stakes to the Australian sportsman. Forward. Taurangi left the impression at Bulls as if she might have been caught short of a race. This Beau Pere filly is sure to be more forward next week at Trentham. False Price. Although Lady Stella is on the - upgrade, backers did not stop to consider the fact that at Bulls, Hanover, who looked short of a gallop at Wanganui, was meeting the Hastings mare on 191bs better terms. As the result, Hanover paid a false price. I Quality Stock. There is no doubt about the quality of the stock of the Son-in-Law horse, Beau Pere. He had four representatives at Greenmeadows on Saturday; Ivar, Kathbella and Gayest Son' were winners and Gay Son was runner-up in the sprint to Kathbella. Red Witch. It would be well to forget about the defeat of Red Witch at Napier Park on Saturday. This Nigger Minstrel mare was in a winning position when Royal Spades almost fell and sent her back to last. She is standing up to het racing well and is entered for Trentharn. ' RACING FIXTURES March 9, 11.---Taranaki J.C. March 10, 11. —Cromwell J.C. March 11. —Carterton R.C.
