COST OF LIVING

MR J. HODGENS DEFENDS NEW ZEALAND REPLY TO AUSTRALIAN CRITICS. OUR SUPERIOR CLIMATE. By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright. MELBOURNE, March 7. About 110 building artisans applied today to Mr J. Hodgens, M.P., the. New Zealand Government representative, for work in New Zealand. Mr Hodgens spent four hours interviewing the men. Replying to the letter published by the “Melbourne Herald” yesterday warning tradesmen of the high cost of living in New Zealand and ’ stating that the rent of a four-roomed old wooden house was at least £3 a week, Mr Hodgens said that the problem referred to was one created in a capitalistic society whenever capitalism took an advantage of a housing shortage

The New Zealand Government was building houses to let at 25s 6d to 27s 6d a week. The figure of £3 mentioned by the correspondent could only refer, he said, to the most modern type of house. Replying to another correspondent who said that New Zealand had nine months winter, Mr Hodgens said Auckland had a more temperate and pleasant climate than any Australian city. Other New Zealand towns had more hours of sunshine annually than Melbourne.
