MAN OF WEIGHT
MAORI RACE INTERESTED. Mr Alexander Marjoribanks, a lively chronicler of the early days in his book “Travels in New Zealand." published in 1846, came out to Port Nicholson on board the Bengal Merchant. He was gratified to find that his mere size made him an object of great interest to the local Maoris who regarded the big as synonymous with the beautiful. “A young man and a young woman insisted on accompanying me, and taking hold of my hand. Had I been twenty stone instead of fifteen. I actually believe they would have worshipped me as a deity." Perhaps this worthy Scottish immigrant did not quite realise that he would have been considered good eating as well as passing fair.
