On the first day Otago had scored 184 in its first innings and the visitors 105 for three wickets. Today the visiting players carried their total® to 434 and Otago batted for an hour and a quar-. ter before stumps and scored 03 for the loss of one wicket. Features of the day’s play were a double century by Dempster and a fast-scoring partnership between Dempster and Watts, who hit two sixes. The day proved a triumph for the New Zealand member of the visiting side, Dempster, who played a very fine innings for 200 and then threw his wicket away -in attempting a bigger hit than usual. He should have been out at 66, a reasonably easy catch to extra cover being dropped, but thereafter his batting was a model of soundness and attractive scoring. All bowling came alike to him and he played strokes all found the wicket with the greatest of freedom. His partnership with the free-hitting Surrey professional. Watts, which took the score along from 250 to 393 for the seventh wicket, was a bright and breezy interlude, Dempster’s attractive stroke play being set against hitting by Watts that increased in power and abandon after Dempster was out. Watts was the last man out with a most aggressive 84 to his credit. Scores are: — OTAGO. First Innings 184 Second Innings.
