COLLEGE CARNIVAL

SATURDAY’S BIG FAIR GROSS TAKINGS £250. NOVEL & ATTRACTIVE FEATURES. All roads led to the Wairarapa College on Saturday afternoon when the ■Parents’ Association of the school held an excellent carnival. The weather was warm and fine and there was a large attendance of the public. The carnival, which was an outstanding success was ably controlled by Mr M. G. Mac Kay (organiser? and assisted by A. J. Towns (secretary of the Parents' Association) who have devoted much time and work during the past few weeks to ensuring the success of the carnival. The gross proceeds were in the vicinity of £250. The carnival was officially opened by Mr J. Robertson, M.P., who was accompanied by Mrs Robertson. Mr Robertson, who congratulated the Parents! Association on its fine effort, to a similar function three years ago, I on which occasion the “burning need” I was the provision of an assembly hall. I “Today we have not only an assembly V * i hall, but an institution second to none | in New Zealand,” said Mr Robertson. ■Regulations, he added, forbade further outlay in expenditure on incidentals, the sum of £60,000 having already been.spent on the institution, and the Parents’ Association had organised the splendid carnival that day. Mr Robertson referred to a caption displayed in the procession prior to the carnival, urging the public to buy New Zealand goods, thereby providing employment. Mr W. R. Nicol, chairman of the Board of Governors, expressed thanks to the public for its generous support and Mr M. G. Mac Kay endorsed his remarks. Mrs Robertson was later presented with ‘a bouquet by a senior pupil of the College. Some fine drill and folk dancing was given by girl pupils under the direction of’Miss Edwards. ■ The many sideshows and stalls did brisk business. An excellent concert and a play were presented by pupils under the direction of Miss O. R. Sutherland and Mr G. W. Morice. During the afternoon greatly appreciated numbers were played by the Masterton Municipal Band and the Wairarapa College Pipe Band. The numerous sideshows were in charge of Mr G. Masters, assisted by a large committee. Messrs G. G. Hancox (Principal) and Mr Mac Kay acted as ground stewards, and Messrs A. O. Jones and Rogers as treasurers. Competition was keen for a silver cup (donated by Mr McAlister) in the rifle-shooting competition. Under the control of Messrs J. Conly and McAlister some good shooting was witnessed. Messrs C. McDonald, W. H. Downes (Christchurch) and R. Faulknor will shoot off in the final. The baby show attracted a large crowd, and Mrs R. C. Drummond and Miss Barnett had a difficult task in making the award's. Dr. Berney was of great assistance during the afternoon. Mr F. C. Daniell, president of the Parents’ Association, was unavoidably absent. A fitting climax to a grand day was an enjoyable dance held in the assembly hall, when there was si large gathering - of. pupils and ex-pupils. Enjoyable music was’supplied by Mackay’s Orchestra. The inter-house tug-of-war attracted many spectators and was greatly appreciated. The results of the many competitions were as follow:— Wheelbarrow guessing competition: Mr G. W. Hallam 1, Mr C. Williams; clock golf, H. E. Pither; ice cream, etc., Mesdames A. J. Towns and G C Dickel. Many other willing assistants also helped towards the great success.
