PROMISING THREE-YEAR-OLD
(By
“The Cynic.”)
' One of the most promising horses seen out at the Te Aroha Jockey Club's meeting was the three-year-olcl Mintlaw, who ran second in the Waitoa Handicap, and scored easily in the Elstow Handicap. It was considered that Mintlaw was unlucky on the first day, and this idea was strengthened by the very decisive manner in which he silenced the opposition over the last furlong of the Elstow Handicap. The future appears bright for Mintlaw, who should soon win his way out of the hack class. Up to the present he has had only five starts, and in the > last three he has registered two wins and a second. Mintlaw was turned out in fine condition by Heaton, who also had his other representatives, Royal Abb and Glen Abb, in capital order for their engagements at Te Aroha. The Hampton Line. There does not appear to be much prospect of French, American or other cutside stayers overshadowing those of England while the Hampton line is kept going through Son-in-Law, Gains-' borough and their descendants. Son-in-Law has been at the stud for 21 years, and is still there at the age of 27. In 1.938 he was eleventh on the winning list. ..He was at the head of the list in 1924 and 1930. On nine occasions he has been among the first half-dozen sires on the winning list. Since he went to the stud in 1917 (he did not race after five years) his stock have won over 800 races, worth about £360,000. Gainsborough now 24 years old, has sired winners of over 400 races, worth about £330,000. He has been at the stud for 19 years. His son, Solario, has sired the winners of about £200,000. Solario was foaled in 1922. His sons in New Zealand include St. Boswells and Vermeer. Unfortunate Failing. At both Winton and Gore Ortyx refused to line up to the barrier, and on each occasion she was hopelessly left at the start. The Lord Warden filly displayed brilliant speed as a two-year-old, but her nervousness will be a handicap to her, although with time she may overcome this.

High Caste proved himself one of the best colts of the present decade by his effortless victory in the Sires’ Produce Stakes at Flemington on Saturday. Zonda ran a game race and Aurania finished well but Wilson was disappointing. The winner’s share of the stake was £2555. El Golea was always prominent and registered a brilliant win in the Newmarket Handicap. Aurie’s Star gave an excellent performance under his big weight and Kanuri surprised by his forward finishing. The placed horses finished alongside the inside rail. El Golea, who finished third in the Newmarket last year, was purchased early in the spring by the Hon. A. Crofts for 1000 guineas, and is proving a rare bargain. Mr; Crofts also purchased several horses at the New Zealand yearling sales. Amigble made a good effort to finish fourth. The Trump was never 1
dangerous. The Adelaide-owned and trained Celtic King outclassed his rivals in the Pines Hurdle Race, and shaped like a National possibility. Firewood had a comfortable win in the Victoria Steeplechase in which the former New Zealander, Midacre, broke down. Wakerife fell. In an exciting run to the post Marauder finished brilliantly to win the King’s Cup. O’Sullivan was originally engaged to ride Marauder, but asked to be relieved the previous day in order to ride Respirator, who ran a good race. Pageant finished well. Bourbon went a good race. Spear Chief had a poor run and nearly fell a furlong from the post. Marauder is owned by the bookmaker, Mr. Wallace Mitchell. ■ The West Australian-owned and trained Tetreen gave a smart performance to lead throughout in the Brunswick Stakes. Tempest finished well, but just failed. Micawber ran a good third. Tetreen is trained by J. Kelly, who claims seven Perth Cup winners. The weather was warm and there was an excellent attendance.
