PLAY AREAS FOR CHILDREN

DEVELOPMENTS IN BRITAIN. The English National Playing Fields Association was established in 1925 to promote field sports, and has as its aim, a playground for every child. It is one of the bodies at present receiving grants from the Government to assist them to provide new playing fields. According to a recent circular, over 1200 playing fields, covering more than 6.400 acres, have provided accommodation for a million and a half on play areas. This has found work and recreation for many unemployed, and has awakened a public conscience to the needs of recreation of the nation. The result of this Association’s work has made a great many big business

firms conscious of the fact that it is necessary to keep their workers in good health, and happy from a social point of view. Several factories have united together to produce one centre for their workers. It is realised that it was far better for a number of units to unite for fraternity than just for the staff of the one industrial unit to have its own facilities. In New Zealand a number of the firms responsible for large staffs have seen the wisdom of good play and recreational facilities for their workers, and should be congratulated on the excellent accommodation that they have provided. Mr Bach remarks that he has not yet had brought to his notice any cases of d number of large manufacturing institutions getting together to produce one centre for their use.
