(By
“The Cynic.")
Golden Ridge is one of the most improved horses in commission and the Lackham gelding is a credit to the Awapuni trainer, E. W. Watson, for whom he has not run a bad race. Golden Ridge won his first race in October, 1936. and then lost all form for two seasons. Watson took him over last winter with the idea of trying him as a jumper, but the big gelding improved so much in appearance that he was tempted to try him again at flat racing. Although well out of hacks, Golden Ridge was able to run out his nominations at Woodville, and he impressed in beating Boatsong with 9.13 in the saddle. In that race he suffered a bad check three furlongs from home, but he came home too well for the others. Golden Ridge’s next start will be in the Rangitikei Cup at Bulls next week, his first race in open company, and his recent form suggests that he will add to the £775 he has won since he was taken over by Watson.
Turned Out. The two-year-old Classic, who deve- - loped a cold at the Auckland mid-sum- ( mer meeting, has been turned out until next season, when he will race as a i gelding. In his seven starts this term i Classic has missed a place only on one j occasion, winning at his second start and being three times second and twice third. Back to Form. Pirate King returned to form at the Te Aroha fixture when, after winning j handsomely the first day over six fur- J longs he beat all but Galilee over seven i furlongs on the latter day of the fixture. 1 Pirate King showed himself to be a useful performer a couple of seasons i ago and now that he has come right 1 again more should be heard of him in > the months ahead. On “Schooling List.” As a result of her misbehaviour at the barrier at Wingatui, "Gipsy Fair t has been placed on the “schooling list, and she was debarred from carrying ( out her engagements at Gore. ] Improved Stamina. When Disband first raced he showed extreme brilliance but lacked stamina. ( Recently he has been rather slow to ( begin, but has finished stoutly in his last four or five races. < — 1 Versatile and Consistent. ] Llangollen, who won the Herries ( Memorial Cup for her breeders, Messrs ] Abbott, is a six-year-old mare by The Ace from Llanberes (Marble Arch— Recoup). She has been a versatile performer, having won at distances from six to ll furlongs. In three seasons she has gone to the barrier on 28 occasions, and has won 13 times; been second five times and. third three times. Checked at Start. The two-year-old Lady Bambury was unable to show her paces in the Electric Handicap at Te Aroha the other day as Esquire swerved right across in front of her as the tapes were released and she was badly left as a consequence. The daughter of Bambury and Reveal has shown speed over short distances on the tracks and as she gains experience she may prove a winner for the R. T. Reid stable. Spanish Lad. < Spanish Lad’s sprint success at Gore was one of the highlights of the meeting. as the Balboa gelding outclassed a useful field and could have bettered his time of Imin 12 3-ssec had he been required to. It was his first start in open company, and his success was well anticipated, as he was confidently supported. For some time it had been; well known that Spanish Lad was more than capable of extending Rodeur, recognised as the best sprinter in the south, in his work, and his Gore win confirmed this. There is no other sprinter in the south at the present with brighter prospects than the Balboa gelding. Will Improve. Among the likely improvers noted at the recent Te Aroha fixture was Desert Star, who after being one of the pacemakers over the greater part of the Manawaru Hurdles on Monday faded into fourth. When trained by J. F. Tutchen Desert Star proved himself a useful performer and now that he appears to be coming right again he will bear watching in pending engagements. Odtaa Unlucky. Odtaa appeared somewhat unlucky to miss a place in the Elstow Handicap on Monday at Te Aroha. One of the last early he gradually improved his position but when attempting to come through in the straight he was hemmed in and he was obliged to pull out from behind a bunch to secure a clear run. He was flying at the finish to beat all but the placed division. Best Race. Spendthrift went his best race this season when he finished second to On Call at Gore. He was hard ridden over the last furlong, and responded gamely as he was doing his best work at the | finish. The Paper Money three-year-old I requires a strong horseman to get the most out of him. I Laughing Lass. I Now that Laughing Lass is back in l form she is likely to enjoy further i early success, and as she can run out ' a mile she might repeat Oratory’s ! last year success for Mr T. A. Duncan lin the Thompson Handicap at TrenJ tham this month. i I Bonstar Shows Dash. ; Bonstar showed an encouraging i burst of speed in the middle stages of j the hack mile and a-quarter on the ! latter day at Te Aroha and it was only lin the last little bit that his condition 5 gave out. He will bear watching, j "
Stayed On. Green Boa won the Trial Handicap the second day at Gore by staying on, and the Balboa gelding is just the type to win over longer distances. His dam. Greencloth, is a half-sister to Rivalry (dam of Rival Hit), Full Feather. Semper Paratus, Ball Dress.and Cricket Eat.
Tosh Makes Amends. Tosh made amends at Te Aroha om Monday for his Te Rapa failures and his success was thoroughly merited. He and Kathbella fought out a thrillingfinish and the Te Rapa sprinter ran right to his best form to prevail by a narrow margin. Quite Sound. The Sandwichman has made a reappearance on the tracks, and will soon get into serious work again. A report that he was suffering from unsoundness has no foundation, as there has been nothing amiss with him. TARANAKI MEETING FIRST DAY’S ACCEPTANCES. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH.
