NATIONAL WELFARE
MEETING OF WOMEN’S LEAGUE. TWO GARMENT ROOM TO- BE CLOSED. The monthly meeting- of the Women’s National Welfare League was held at the. Midland Hotel yesterday. Those present were: Miss Kummer (in the chair), Mesdames' H. E. Pither, R. C. Drummond, S. Fletcher, J. Caselberg, T. F. Watson, S. McCracken, A. Latimer, A. W. McKenzie, F. Garland, E. J. Coleman, S. Coradine, L. Hunter, N. E. Bull, S. J. Munn, A. E. Kilgour, Misses Guild and Wilson. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames T. Jordan, S, L. P: Free, W. Andrew, W. McKenzie, H. Brisco, G. G. Tolhurst, R. Whyborn and Miss Boddington. After opening the meeting with prayer, Miss Kummer (president) welcomed back all members after the summer recess. A hearty welcome was also extended to a new member. Letters of thanks were received from the Institute for the Blind for the work carried out at the A. and P. Association’s Show in February. The receipts from the show and orders were £l9O and the expenses were only 255. The League was able tq, do this only by the help given from the Rotary Club, Y.M.C.A. and A. and P: officials, to whom is extended the League’s thanks. A letter was received from the manager of the Whatman Home thanking the League for taking the girls for- an outing during Christmas week. Mrs Robertson also expressed her thanks to the League for assistance regarding clothes in an urgent cast last month. The secretary reporting sending in an application for a grant from' the T. G. Macarthy Trust. It was decided that as the Two Garment room was to be closed, a committee of three be appointed to sort over and dispose of any clothing in the rooms at present. A letter of thanks is to be sent to the Borough Council for its kindness in allowing the use of the room during the years the garment society had been in existence. The hospital report showed that two visits every month J)ad been paid to the hospital during me past, three months. Special teas had been provided for ward 6: and 7 and flowers and literature- distributed throughout the other wards. On Christmas eve all patients in the T.B. ward received a present from the League and Christmas greetings were extended to all patients in hospital. A hearty welcome was accorded to Matron Barnett by the League visitors in January. The visitors for March are’ Mrs Tolhurst and Miss Cameron. Mrs McKenzie reported on 5 cases attended to in social welfare work during January and February, coal, clothing and groceries having been distributed.
Mrs Munn reported on the Buchanan Home Christmas visit. A gift was given to all inmates. A donation which enabled cigarettes to be given to all tjje male inmates was received from the Returned Soldiers’ Club and an anonymous donation of 10s from a Toe H. member.
Mrs Caselberg congratulated Mrs Munn on her splendid report.
It was decided that a letter of congratulation be sent to Miss Higginson on her receipt of a New Year honour from the King. After the tea recess Mrs Fletcher gave a very instructive address on the defence of New Zealand and what that defence meant to the women and children of New Zealand. Miss Kummer thanked Mrs Fletcher for her interesting address, i As the next meeting day falls on Good Friday the meeting for April will be held on the 14th.
