SHAREBROKER IN COURT
CHARGES OF FALSE PRETENCES. PLEA OF TECHNICAL OFFENCE ACCEPTED. (By Telegrapn—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Five charges pf false pretences were admitted by ■ a sharebroker, William Lancelot Aynsley, when he appeared before Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court this morning. Aynsley returned to New Zealand from Australia in September, 1938, and opened an account at the National Bank at Wanganui with £4, said De-tective-Sergeant Sinclair. Aynsley was selling shares for the Scottish Loan and Finance Company, of Sydney. He operated to a small extent on his account and then went to the Star Hotel, Auckland, where cheques were passed on December 30 and 31, Januar' - 2 (2) and 3. Aynsley was a married man and was formerly a solicitor. When Aynsley came back to New Zealand, he was engaged on a brokerage contract for an Australian company said Mr R. Twyneham, who appeared for the accused. Aynsley spent a good deal of money, but he was robbed of the fruits of his labour by legislation prohibiting money leaving the country. Mr Twyneham submitted that Aynsley had committed an offence only in law, because if a man knew he did not have money in his account when he passed a cheque he was liable. Aynsley thought he had a good chance of getting adequate sums of money paid into his account, but he was disappointed. Mr Twyneham then handed over a cheque for £55 17s 3d. In convicting and ordering Aynsley to come up for sentence if called on within three years, the Magistrate said he would accept counsel's statement that it was a technical offence.
