BIG PURCHASES NECESSARY. MONTREAL. Indicating the value to domestic trade of the requirements of the large railway companies, the Canadian National Railway, which operates 24,000. miles of tracks in the Dominion, purchased goods to the value of 51,000,000 dollars during 1938. Of this total 11,100,000 dollars was expended on new equipment and 10,000,000 dollars on fuel from Canadian mines. Approximately 315,000,000 feet of lumber was used mainly for railway ties as well as 5,000,000 gallons of creosote, tar and similar products for their treatment. New equipment purchased during the year included 2070 railway cars. It has been calculated that directly and indirectly, the purchases of the one railway company during the year gave employment to tens of thousands of workmen in the Dominion. Other railways operating in Canada likewise spent large sums of money during the year for equipment and supplies.
