PAPAL ELECTION
THE LEADING CANDIDATES. CHOICE OF CARDINAL PACELLI POSSIBLE.. (Independent Cable Service.) VATICAN CITY, February 28. ■ Cardinal Pacelli now stands out as the probable choice of 27 non-Italian Cardinals, while 35 Italians still apparently favour Cardinal Massimi. Vatican City circles point out that, in addition to the foreign votes, Cardinal Pacelli is strongly favoured by many Italians,.; despite the tradition against the election of the secretary of the late Pope. Cardinal Pacelli needs two-thirds of the votes. The conclave formally begins tomorrow. ENTERING THE CONCLAVE VOTING TO BEGIN TODAY. (Received This Day, 10 a.m.) VATICAN CITY, March J. Led by a choir singing the Veni Creator and a prelate holding the Papal Cross, sixty-two cardinals walked in procession before entering the conclave chamber. The great bell of St Peter’s rang three times and the< Swiss Guards, with lighted torches,and thv conclave architects, inspected .all doors to ensure that they were locked, inside and outside. The deed of closing was then read and signed. The voting will begin tomorrow.
