CORONATION’S PUZZLING FORM

(By

“The Cynic.”)

Prior to his brilliant and unexpected win at Pahiatua it was the intention of the connections of Coronation to geld the good-looking son of Limond and Jewel of Asia, but that effort again revived fond hopes in the breasts of the owner and trainer of the colt that he would fulfil early promise and be a St. Leger proposition. It was with that idea in mind that Coronation was taken t othe Waikato and Te Aroha meetings, where it was hoped that he would prove beyond doubt that he had at last come solid. The result of his three races, however, is very confusing. At Te Rapa last week, Coronation drifted badly in the early stages of the Waikato Hack Cup, and was reported to be 100 yards behind the leader when the straight was reached. To finish second, only three-quarters of a length behind the winner, Gay Rebel, Coronation registered a remarkable performance.

Stays on Well. Lady Middleham, although not a big filly, is game, and stays on solidly. She is a close relative of Lady Leigh, and is held on lease from Lady Leigh’s owner, Mr E. Gates. As the result of his Waikato form Coronation was backed down to an extremely short price for the Champion Hack' Handicap at Te Aroha on Saturday, and he duly won. The margin in his favour was not as much as would have been expected, but still, he finished on strongly for his success. On Monday the effort of the Woodville colt was frankly disappointing. He galloped in patches only and ran as greenly as at any stage of his career, leaving his army of admirers lamenting.

That performance leaves the impression that the colt is not right and it appears probable he will race more solidly as a gelding. Whether he will contest the St. Legers now is problematical, but there is little doubt that Coronation, on his day, is a brilliant galloper and a nattiral stayer. It is to be hoped that he will be given a chance to rehabilitate himself in the N.Z. St. Leger this month, but if he does not do well in that race, it would be the wiser course to have him operated on soon and look to him to win renown next season in the big cups.

Coronation is bred in the purple. One of the best types of Limond’s seen for some time, he is bred from a very successful family, being a brother to the V.R.C. Sires’ Produce Stakes winner Sir John and to Viceroy, who ran second to Allunga in the V.R.C. St. Leger. A half-brother was that smart sprinter Farmer. Jewel of Asia, the dam of Coronation, is an imported mare by the Cicero horse Grosvenor from Ayesha, who was by Ayrshire from Armenia, a half-sister by Westminster to that grand stayer and very successful sire of stayers, William the Third. From the: same family come those fine stayers Trivalve and Hall Mark, both dual Derby and Melbourne Cup winners.

Mr W. H. Gaisford’ purchased Coronation privately*'from " the Koatanui Stud, and it is to be hoped that the three-year-old makes the expected return for the substantial outlay of the Dannevirke sportsman. Galilee's Return to Form. Prior to her success in the Piako Handicap on Monday, Galilee, had not won for nearly three years, her last previous win having been in the Woodstock Stakes Handicap at the Waipa Racing Club’s Winter meeting in May, 1936. As a two-year-old Galilee won five races and £1375 in stakes, her victories including the A.R.C. Welcome Stakes, Avondale Stakes, Royal Stakes and Victoria Handicap; At three years she won four times and included in her seven placed performances was a second to Heritage, beaten a neck, in the Avondale Guineas and a second to Entail in the Great Northern Guineas. Weak Opposition. In six seasons, Ace Willonyx had run 17 times without winning, but he came to the forefront with a . vengeance at Ruatoria on Saturday by scoring twice. However, the opposition could hardly have been weaker. Gay Hussar. The three-year-old Gay Hussar, who had his first race in the South Island at Hokitika on Saturday, -to gain a third in the Novice Stakes, is now owned by Mrs W. Parsons, Amberley. In 11 starts last season Gay Hussar was twice third. Good Form. Ferriby, who ran second in his first two appearances at Hokitika, is a four-year-old gelding by Nightmarch' from Charmeuse, and is thus the progeny of a Great Autumn winner and of a Great Easter winner. Ferriby is owned by Mr G. Hall, and, although he had attracted attention in his recent track efforts, he was expected to require more time. Retired to the Stud. The Night Raid mare Accomplice has been retired to the stud, and she will be mated with the Blandford horse Bulandshar. Accomplice is a winner, and she has the blood and build to make a first-class brood mare. Her dam is Endorse by Paper Money. A Gore Winner. Peony Rose, winner of the feature event at Gore, is trained at Riverton by A. McKay, for her breeder, Dr.’ Robertson, of Tapanui. She is by Robespierre from Uaigle, and on the maternal side comes from a line of winners produced by the Tapanui sportsman. By Beau Pere. Included in T. R. George's team at Trentham is a brown cold by Beau Peru out of the Martian—Trichas mare Flying Mist, who is a full-sister to Cuddle’s dam (Caress), and has been the dam previously of Ardmayle and Erin’s Mist. Mr R. J. Murphy bought Flying Mist, in foal to Beau Pere, at the Westmere dispersal sale two years ago for 350 guineas, being attracted to the mare because of the success he was having with Cuddle. The foal she was carrying is the colt v/ho will carry Mr Murphy’s colours next season. The youngster, who is now being accustomed to the saddle, is another typical Beau Pere, something after the stamp of Beaulivre, as that well-performed colt was 12 months ago.
