A BEAUTY PARLOUR

TO BE FOUND IN THE KITCHEN. BREAD AND MILK TO THE RESCUE. Sometimes, when you are on the eve of an important engagement, you discover that you are without some necessary beauty aid, or that an unsightly blemish has appeared on your skin. Your beauty salon is closed oi’ is too far away to call upon for help, but do not despair, there is still your kitchen, which will always help you in your extremity. The average kitchen, if we only realised it, is a well-stocked beauty cupboard. Perhaps, for instance, you have lost or mislaid your rouge. Do not worry and fret. Dash out to the kitchen cupboard and procure the cochineal bottle, pour a few drops into a saucer, add enough water to make a pinky fluid, and lightly dab on the cheeks with a small piece of cottonwool. The resultant colour is just as effective as rouge, and will carry you on until you are able to procure your correct cheek colouring. Of course, we always have cleansing cream on our dressing table, but, just the same, the time may come when you are without it. You should then. procure some liquid paraffin, add a little lavender water to scent it, and use it in the same way as you would a cream. This lotion can even be used as a powder base, in which case is should, of course, be applied very sparingly. Another beauty make-shift is that, when you fun out of nail-polish, apply a little face powder to your polisher, and you will be surprised at the shine which will result. When you are going to a dance and find that you have minor blemishes which are marring your beauty, these may be effectually hidden, providing you are willing to give half an hour to the process. First sponge your face, neck, and arms with a little warm milk. Allow the milk to soak into the skin as long as possible, until it is thoroughly dry, and then apply your powder, By carrying out this beauty treatment all minor defects will be camouflaged, and you will also find that the powder will adhere much longer than is usually the case. Water and Potato Aids. When your cheeks are rather hollow, you will then have to have recourse to the water tap. Wet them with very cold water, and then, whilst they ai e still wet, rub them in a circular movement with a towel. Go round and round in the sunken places, making your movement very deep, so that the muscles directly beneath the skin are invigorated. This treatment will not only tend to render the cheeks more firm, but will give them a pretty colour which effectually helps to disguise the hollowAn oily skin never looks fresh or clean, and your kitchen will help you again here, too. Go to the bread-tin, take a thin slice of bread and cut it into four squares. Steam your face for five minutes over a bowl. of boiling water, then, whilst the face is still wet,’ massage it with the bread. As the bread crumbles and falls apart, take a fresh square. Keep massaging until the skin is quite dry. This treatment will not only remove the oiliness from the skin, bdt it will also cleanse the pores thoroughly. When the treatment is, concluded the skin will appear smooth and velvety. Combating Oiliness. Another excellent method of combating oiliness and face shininess is by applying potato to the skin every night. First bathe your face for five minutes with warm water, then dry the skin, and whilst it is still soft massage the face with a slice of freshly-cut potato. Keep massaging until the skin has absorbed the potato’s moisture, then cut a fresh slice and carry on with the treatment. When you are satisfleed that no further moisture can be absorbed, allow the juice to dry on the skin, and go to bed. In the morning wash the face with warm water to which has been added a few drops of eau de Cologne. The use of olive oil hardly requires mention. If you hair is very dry, add a few drops to the last rinsing water when shampooing and a beautiful gloss will result. Massaged into the hands, it is excellent for whitening and softening. Added to your washing water it will make the water soft and keep the skin from becoming rough. Massaged into the eyebrows and eyelashes it will make them appear more luxuriant, and massaged into the scalp it is an excellent dandruff preventive.”’ Apples, pears, peaches, and oranges can also be massaged into the skin with excellent results. These fruits have a tonic action which not only corrects oiliness, but also refines and cleanses the skin. So it can be seen that your kitchen larder is a veritable storehouse for beauty, and the articles used are very economical.
