' SCOUTMASTER FAREWELLED. SERVICES EULOGISED. (“Times-Age” Special.) There was a large attendance at the Scout euchre tournament held in St. Mary’s Hall last evening. At the conclusion of the card tourney, Mr Gaze, chairman of the Scout Committee, was called upon to make a presentation to Mr D. L. Barclay, Scoutmaster, who is leaving the district. Mr Gaze referred to the good qualities of their departing guest and said the troop was extremely sorry to lose the services of their senior pfficer, who at all times had done good work for the Corps since, its reorganisation. He had brought the troop to the high standard of efficiency it enjoyed today. The boys would miss their master, as he had endeared himself to them. He ask- ' ed Mr Barclay to accept a clock on behalf of the troop and the committee, and in doing so said he was sure the ' recipient would not mark time in Scout activities wherever he went. He wished him the best of luck in his new sphere of work. Mr Barclay thanked the' troop and committee-for their gift and. said he would always remember the happy time he had spent with the Carterton troop. (Applause)? i Mr Gaze mentioned that the troop was fortunate in being able to have the (Services of Mr Huntly, Scoutmaster of Greytown and his assistants. Three cheers were given for Mr Barclay. The prize-winners for the cards were: Ladies, Mrs W. Herdman-1, Miss F. Eagle 2; men, .M. Ticehurst 1, Frank * O’Keefe 2. CLAREVILLE SCHOOL. “SWIMMING SPORTS. Pupils of the Clareville School held their swimming sports in the Carterton Swimming Baths yesterday afternoon. The baths were loaned to the school for the occasion by the Municipal Baths Committee, to whom the school expresses its thanks. The sports were held under the supervision of Mi- Keith Reid,'who has always taken a keen interest in teaching the school children to swim. Results were:— 25 yards boys’ handicap: J. Daysh 1, R. Reid 2, B. Banks 3. Relay race: W. Morris and J. Daken I. B. Banks and J. Daysh 2, R. Reid and V. Humphries 3. Standing an<T funning dive: W. Morris 1, B, Banks 2. Most, improved boy swimmer for week: L. Roska. Most improved girl swimmer for week: M. Nicholls. Certificate for distance swimming, 880 yards, W. Morris; R. Reid and M. Humphries, 50 yards. Certificates for learners, 25 yards: BarbariJJßeid, Jean Daken, Jim Daysh. BATHS TRAGEDY. FUNERAL OF THE VICTIM. The funeral of the late Henry Walter Nilsen, second son of Mr and Mrs J. P. Nilsen, of Rhodes Street, Carterton, took place yesterday afternoon when many friends and relatives followed the remains to their last resting place at the Clareville cemetery. Many beautiful wreaths covered the casket and the pall-bearers were: Messrs Gibb-Johnston, C. Holland and C. A. Chennells (representing the R.S.A.); R. Rawlings (uncle), V. Lee and.F. Wiley (cousins). A service was conducted at the residence and. at the graveside by the Rev. W. F. Stent, of St. Mark’s Church. Among the wreaths was one from the Carterton District High School, which was made of flowers in the school colours, yellow and red. Cricket. Cricket will be played on Carrington Park, Carterton, on Saturday between Carterton and St. Patrick’s, Masterion. The Carterton team will be as under: Ewing, Byers, Harp, Kennedy, Fitzgerald, Fisher, Steffert, Thompson, Berry, Ward, Loader, Tretheway. Personal. Mr H. Goodin, brother of Messrs Herbert, Harold and Rupert Goodin, has been on a visit to Carterton. He returned to Paremata yesterday. Bowling. Carterton teams who will be playing against Manawatu when Wairarapa meet the former in the return interbowling centre match at Palmerston North on Saturday will be as follow: — Kilmister, Beaven, Underhill, Harp (s); Smith, Newbould, W. Hart, Barr (s); Matson, Bain, Stent, Barber (s). Odd Fellows’ Lodge. The annual district conference of the Wellington District Manchester Unity Order of Odd Fellows takes place at Sister Wallis Lodge Room, Wellington, on Saturday, commencing at 9 a.m. The Wairarapa deputies are: Bros. R. Farrow, Eketahuna; S. V. Gooding and R. Baikie, Masterton; H. A. Bick, Pahiatua; G. S. Bruce, Carterton; F. A. Davis, Grey town; J. S. Viles, Featherston: and C. J. DeLacey, Martinborough. The conference will conclude on Saturday evening.
