ANCIENT ROGEN

PROTECTION OF CATHEDRAL. The Cathedral of Rouen, admired by Ruskin, stands in the centre of a number of streets of ancient houses, a wonderful background of the past. This picturesque setting is to be preserved for the delight of future generations. After long negotiations, the Service des Monuments Histotiques has succeeded in obtaining from the municipal authorities of Rouen that within the immediate surroundings of the cathedral the height of the houses shall not be increased, and in case of rebuilding or transformation their facades and roofs must be in the style of the houses of the fifteenth to the eighteenth century. Rouen is 'known in France as the “Museum City" on account of its ancient buildings, and its friends are determined that it shall continue to deserve this title.
