ANTI-SEMITISM

ISSUE RAISED IN SOUTH AFRICA MINISTER UPHOLDS FREEDOM & JUSTICE. INDICTMENT OF NATIONALIST TACTICS. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. CAPE TOWN. February 25. A former Minister and member of the Opposition. Mr Eric Louw, speaking on his Aliens Bill in the Assembly, which has as its object the preventing of further Jewish immigration, declared that if South Africa did not tackle the problem, the occurrence of certain European countries would be repeated. South Africa’s proportion of Jews was the world's fourth highest, namely, 5 per cent, which even Jewish leaders admitted was near the danger line. Mr Stuttaford, Minister of the Interior, asserting that the existing laws controlled the immigration of undesirable Jews, alleged that the Nationalists had adopted anti-Semitism because it had brought to power in Europe groups which had been otherwise powerless. The Government would unalterably maintain the principles of freedom and justice.
