UNIFIED CONTROL

ANIMAL RESEARCH WORK IN DOMINION ESTABLISHMENT OF NEW DIVISION,. DR J. F. FILME APPOINTED DIRECTOR. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The formation within the Department of Agriculture of a new division devoted solely to the prosecution of research into animal diseases and animal production investigations was announced at the weekend by the Minister of Agriculture, the Hon W. Lee Martin. Dr J. F. Filmer has been appointed director of the new Division of Animal Research, and Wallaceville and Ruakura have been created animal research stations. . \ “All scientific officers of the Live Stocks, Fields and Chemical -Divisions that will enable Dr Filmer to intensify the department’s activities along the lines of animal research are to be transferred to the new division,” said the Minister. “In addition, it will be necessary to strengthen staff along pathological, genetic and animal parasite lines. “As far as Ruakura is concerned, its animal work as an integral unit of the . new division will be greatly extended and Mr P. W. Smallfield has been appointed superintendent and will devote the whole of his ‘activities to the work of the new division. “For some time I have felt that it was essential that the various more or less unco-ordinated animal research workers in my department should come under unified control and direction, together with a considerable strengthening of such research officers. Hence the formation of the new division, one that should be of the very greatest service to New Zealand farming. “A feature of very great importance in the creation of the new division under unified control will be its ready ability to co-operate freely, not only with all branches of the department, but also with other organisations prosecuting animal research, that are not under the control of my department."
