PROLONGED QUAKE

FELT SEVERELY IN PARTS OF HAWKE’S BAY. CROCKERY SUFFERS IN COASTAL HOMES. (lly Telegraph—Press Assoelallon.) WAIPUKURAU, February 24. A fairly severe earthquake of long duration caused alarm in Waipukurau this morning. The direction was at right angles to that of the heavy December shocks. Mangaorapa was again severely shaken and crockery was broken in Porangahau. Homesteads along the coast suffered fairly extensively in this respect. The shock began in Porangahau at exactly 11.20 a.m. and last an unusually long time. It consisted of a fairly even swinging motion, with no final jolt. On the coast it came without noise or warning. The direction appeared to be northeast and south-west, not straight in from the sea as are most earthquakes in this area. SWAYING MOTION. ♦ (By Telegraph—Press Association.) NAPIER, February 24. A steady, swaying earthquake, sufficiently severe to set lights, pictures and other suspended objects swinging, was experienced in Hastings and Napier today at approximately 11.30 a.m. The shake was not severe enough to cause damage in this area. The earthquake was felt in Dannevirke at about 11.20 a.m. as two sharp jolts, separated by an undulating motion of considerable intensity. No damage has been reported.
