BIG SCORING
CANTERBURY BATSMEN SHAPE WELL MATCH AGAINST SIR J. CAHN’S TEAM. BRILLIANT INNINGS BY KERR. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, February 24. A brilliant innings by J. L. Kerr, the Canterbury captain, was the outstanding performance in the first day’s play in the cricket match between Sir Julien Cahn's touring team and Canterbury, which was begun at Lancaster Park today. His display was reminiscent of the brilliant form he displayed a few years ago which made him one of the outstanding batsmen in the Dominion. At the end of the day’s play Canterbury had made 415 for the loss of eight wickets, and if the high scoring continues it will be very doubtful if the match can be finished in three days. Others who batted well were R. E. Menzies and I. B. Cromb. On an easy wicket none of the Canterbury batsmen found the bowling really difficult, and only one so far has not reached double figures. The wicket was made for the batsmen, ahd the bowlers had a hard job keeping runs down. The weather was brilliantly fine with a light breeze from the north-east, and there was a good crowd present considering it was an off day. The gate takings were £l2O. Scores: — CANTERBURY.
