KING’S GRATITUDE MESSAGE TO SPECIAL AREAS. HOPE FOR BETTER TIMES TO COME. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10.30 a.m.) RUGBY, February 24. The King and Queen returned to London late last night after a visit to the north-east. A large crowd assembled to welcome them. • In a telegram to Lord Londondeny, Lord Lieutenant of Durham, the King asked that his warmest thanks be conveyed to the people for their friendly welcome. He added: “We have been glad of the opportunity of seeing what is being done to assist those suffering the great misfortune of unemploymen . We came away deeply impressed by the courageous spirit so clearly prevailing even among those who have been for a long period without work, and we should like to send them a message of encouragement and hope for a better time to come.”
