PACIFIC ISLANDS
EXTENSION OF BRITISH ADMINISTRATION DEVELOPMENT OF AIR SERVICES. NEW ZEALAND’S INTEREST IN ARRANGEMENTS. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. LONDON, February 24. The Colonial Secretary, Mr Malcolm MacDonald, referring in the House of Commons today, to a grant of £7500 for the Gilbert and Ellice Islands, said that the money was required to pay the cost of establishing colonial office officials on three islands in the Pacific which hitherto had been regarded as of little importance but were now brought into prominence in connection with the trans-Pacific air services. Regarding Canton Island, Mr MacDonald said that American and British officials were at present on it in pursuance of the agreement that Britain and America should hold the island in joint trust for a period of years. Discussions were proceeding concerning details of the administration and the carrying out of the trust. Mr Arthur Henderson (Labour) said he hoped that New Zealand was being included in the negotiations as the island might be of considerable strategic importance in the future.
