DEFENCES AGAINST AERIAL ATTACK SETTLEMENT BLACKED OUT PRELUDE TO COMBINED MANOEUVRES. (Independent Cable Service.) SINGAPORE, February 24. The settlement was blacked out yesterday night for the first time to test its defences against aerial attack. The manoeuvres are being repeated tonight. The black-outs are a prelude to combined naval and military manoeuvres to take place in March, in which 25 warships will participate. The British Government is spending £2,000,000 in strengthening the defences of Malay and the Straits Settlements and otherwise protecting Singapore’s back door.
