THREE IN A LINE

(By

“The Cynic.”)

Progeny of the defunct sire Acre placed him at the top of the sires' list for the recent Waikato meeting with three successes. Acre’s successful representatives were Scotland Odtaa and Farland. Should Win. Bright Wings and Gold Wings, who ran second in their respective races at Te Rapa, both ran their best races this season, although Gold Wings had been placed twice previously. With a little more improvement they will swell Mr W. Scholium’s winning record before the season is much further advanced. Balboa’s Stock. Balboa’s progeny are keeping his memory green in the south (says the Herald). Regrets are often heard that the Varco horse should have been “buried” in Southland, but this may not have been the disaster that many people imagine. New Zealand-bred sires are not in gread demand anywhere, and probably Balboa’s opportunities in the southernmost province were as great as they would have been anywhere. In addition, t his stock get tracks there that suit them. • Small Stakes. The race won by Mr G. J. Barton’s two-year-old Bursary in Melbourne recently was worth £2OO to the winner, but as the colt was second favourite at good odds, the stake would not be the main consideration. Bursary won by a neck, and covered five furlongs in lmin 2|sec. Closely Related. Manawahe winner of the Frankton Hurdles, and Beeswing, winner of the Beerescourt Handicap, at Te Rapa on Saturday, are closely related. Black Peri, dam of Beeswing, is half-sister to Manawahe, who also is fully related to Pyrenees, a recent winner at Ellerslie.
