N.S.W. BUILDING WORKERS
RESPONSE TO NEW ZEALAND CALL. STATE PREMIER CONCERNED. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. SYDNEY, February 23. It is estimated that 2000 building tradesmen in Sydney have already sought jobs in New Zealand as a result of the mission of Mr J. Hodgens, M.P. The Premier, Mr B. S. B. Stevens, told the Legislative Assembly today that the loss of skilled tradesmen in large numbers was likely to create a difficult problem for builders here, as well as for the Defence Department. He intends to discuss the matter tomorrow with the New Zealand Government representative. A report from Melbourne tonight states that there is already a shortage of building tradesmen in Victoria and master builders will be seriously embarrassed if many skilled workers accept the New Zealand Government’s offer to work.
Mr Hodgens today dismissed as ridiculous the suggestion that a special ship will be chartered to take the workmen to New Zealand.
