BOBBY CALF POOLS

NEW REGULATIONS FRAMED. OPERATION ON SELF-GOVERNING BASIS. CBy Telegranh—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Revised regulations have been framed governing lhe general operations of protected bobby calf pools established throughout the Dominion. The purpose of the regulations was explained by the Minister of Marketing, the Hon. W. Nash, in a statement issued last evening. "These new regulations,” said Mr Nash, "are an extension of the original bobby calf marketing regulations introduced early in 1938 and which have now been revised in the light of the experience gained in marketing calves under the pool system during the past 12 months. They provide the necessary machinery by which each pool can continue its operations from year to year on a self-governing basis. A total of 58 protected pools were formed during last year, and through the agency of the producer-committees more than 350,000 calves were successfully marketed with substantial savings to the producer and a material’ improvement in the handling' of these small animals. Mr Nash said that a comparison between non-pool areas throughout the Dominion and the protected pools would be of interest to the farming community. The summarised results were as follows: — Non-pool Pool areas areas Condemned calves sp.c. 1.98 p.c. Cartage costs per calf 1/54 11.9 d Average payment to producers per calf 6/5 7/2 “This means.” said the Minister, “that not only have producers in pool areas received an increased payment for their calves, but in addition wasteful overlapping in cartage, with the consequent wear and tear on country roads, has been eliminated, while calves have received far more humane treatment in every way. At present the pool principle is undoubtedly one of the main factors safeguarding our valuable export trade of boneless veal to the United Kingdom, and I am Hopeful that many more pools will be formed during the coming season.’’
