A Shanghai message states that gunmen today entered the western district of the International Settlement, killing one Chinese policeman and wounding four. Afterward they escaped into the Japanese-controlled area. A report yesterday stated that Li Kuo-chieh, a grandson of the famous Li Hung Chang, who was connected with the puppet in Nanking. was assassinated by gunmen in the International Settlement. Li Hung Chang, who was born about 1823 in the province of Anhwei and died at Peking in 1901, was a noted Chinese statesman who was known as “the Bismarck of Asia.” TERRIFIC AIR RAID. They later called on the commander of the AngloItalian forces and reported their action to Tokio. It is stated that Japan demands the prompt arrest of terrorists, increased representation on the Municipal Council and also a fundamental reorganisation of the .International Settlement, in order to facilitate the maintenance of law and order. It is added that Japan will take independent action if her demands are rejected.
