The official conclave of cardinals will open on March 1. It is expected that all of the 62 cardinals will then have arrived. Cardinal Boggiani, who is 76 years old and has been ill with diabetes and is almost blind, has been pronounced sufficiently recovered to participate. Three doctors, one of whom is a surgeon with operating equipment, will be confined in the secret area to attend to invalids. Thirty loudspeakers are being erected on a facade in the Square of St Peter’s.

N.Z. SYMPATHY REPLY FROM THE VATICAN. The following is a copy of a telegram received by his Excellency the Go-vernor-General from His Majesty’s En-voy-Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary. Vatican City, in reply to the message of sympathy conveyed on behalf of the Government and people of New Zealand in connection with the death of His Holiness Pope Pius XI.: “I am desired to express to your Excellency deep gratitude of the Sacred College for the message of condolence which you forwarded on behalf of the Prime Minister. Government and people of New Zealand, on the death of the late Pope, and to say that the College of Cardinals are particularly touched by the tribute paid to the character and work of their loved Pontiff.”

The cardinals assembled for the conclave for the election of a Pope exchanged visits and conferred all day long before the actual conclave starts. A survey of the visits showed that Cardinal Massimo Massimi, a legal expert, orator and author, had the largest number —seventeen. .Cardinal Massimi has not previously appeared among the leading candidates for the papacy, but the number of his supporters is believed substantially to exceed yesterday’s callers who are known to favour his election.
