BOROUGH WORK

REPORTS FOR PAST MONTH. WAIPOUA RIVER SCHEME. At last night’s meeting of the Masterton Borough Council, the Borough Engineer, Mr C. R. Mabson. reported as follows on work carried out during January;— . Streets: —The following tarring work has been carried out during the month: Crayne Street, flanks, Chapel Street to Queen Street both sides; 1 Pownall Street, flanks, Renall Street 3 to Villa Street both sides; Dixon . Street, path, Herbert Street to Crayne t Street west side; Crayne Street, path; ■ Renall Street, path. Chapel Street to F Pownall Street both sides; Villa Street, , path, Cambridge Terrace to Pownall , Street east side; Akura Road, path, , Railway to Dairy Co. east side; Opaki ’ Road, path, Third Street’ to Watson’s west side; Manuka Street, roadway, Totara Street to top of hill; Cooper Street, new road, Te Ore Ore Road to First Street 20ft. wide. Short Street kerbing on the north side between South Road and High Street has been completed and the flanks of the path and roadway have been re-graded to suit new levels. A start has been made with the kerbing of the west side of Totara Street between Te Ore Ore Road and First Street. Lincoln Road is being top dressed with "Honin” a bituminous aggregate for removing the corrigations and depressions in road surfaces. lam proposing to do the whole length of tnis street from Queen Street to the -Railway. Perry Street also has a very uneven surface and I propose treating this street in a similar manner. The Wai•poua River was turned into the new channel across the Park paddock on February 9 and the old channel is being filled in and the stop bank’ constructed across it. I hope to have this | section completed in about a week’s I time when a start will be made to I close the gap adjacent to Queen Street. j Building permits: During the month | four permits were issued having an es- ! timated value of £1046 10s, the fees ! thereon amounting to £4 ss. For the | corresponding month last year, six j permits were issued having an esti- ’ mated value of £3021 16s.

BOROUGH INSPECTOR'S REPORT. The Borough Inspector Mr T. A. Russell reported:—Notifiable infectious disease: A suspected case of diphtheria was reported but ■on bacteriological examination proved negative. Driving tests: Twenty-one applicants for driver’s licences underwent the test required by regulations, 5 failing to come up to standard. Traffic: Fees for heavy traffic amounted to £l4 17s 6d. Three persons were prosecuted for breaches of the regulations. Several prosecutions are pending for breaches of the parking regulations in Queen Street and Perry Street. GAS MANAGER’S REPORT. The Gas Engineer-Manager (Mr J. Y. Douglas) reported: —Gas manufactured: Total gas made corrected N.T.P. was 3,532,400 cubic feet, being an increase of 115,700 cubic feet of 3.3 per cent over the corresponding period of last year. Gas sold per meter shows a decrease of 9 per cent. Government Inspector: The inspector visited the works on Friday, January 20. Calorific value of the gas was 459 B.T.U. and sulphuretted hydrogen absent. General: The works are running very satisfactorily at the present time. The men have been kept busy on cleaning blocked services and mains and servicing the new State houses. At the present time I am renewing some of the wooden platforms at the works as they are becoming dangerous to walk on.
