PAHIATUA EWE FAIR

N.£. LOAN & MERCANTILE. The N.Z. Loan. and Mercantile Agency Co Ltd report: At the second Pahiatua Ewe Fair held yesterday our entries came forward well up to advertised numbers and we submitted 5,000 odd ewes and a few pens of lambs to a very moderate attendance. Few outside buyers were present, and as has been the case with ewe fairs in surrounding districts, prices generally were easier than those realised at our last. fair. This, however, was expected and practically a full clearance can be reported. The entry generally, for quality, could not be compared with the previous fair and this in addition to the reduced prices did not give a very bright tone to the sale. For 4-yr ewes. Messrs Smarts Estate’s entry topped the sale at 20s. 2-th ewe prices also reflected the easier values ruling and for a very outstanding line offered in conjunction with Messrs Abraham and Williams, and on account of Messrs Dougherty Bros, a keen competition from outside buyers saw them sell out at 26s 3d topping the sales by auction. Another attractive pen and one which drew much favourable comment was a line of 200 really well bred and grown woolly ewe lambs offered also in conjunction with Messrs Abraham and Williams, and on account of Mr C. C. Tolley met with keen competition to be finally purchased by a local buyer at 20s 7d. On the day, vendors met the drop, in prices extremely well resulting in the good clearance mentioned above. We quote sales as follows: 2-th ewes: A/c Dougherty Bros, 26s 3d; a/c Smarts Est, 21s 6d; a/c Mrs E. Burr, 24s 7d; a/c Geo Hull, 19s Id; a/c other vendors. 21s, 18s 9d; cull pens, 17s 6d to 16s.
