HOSPITAL AFFAIRS
MEETING OF WAIRARAPA BOARD. COLLECTION OF PATIENTS’ FEES. The chairman, Mr H. H. Mawley, presided at the monthly meeting of the Wairarapa Hospital Board, held today. Others present were: Messrs F. E. Bolton, I. McLeod, F. Court, D. McGregor, W. I. Armstrong, H. Thomas. C. T. Richardson, A. Forsberg, Trevor Beetham, Arch Clark, P. R. Welch, J. F. Thompson, W. B. Martin, Mesdames J. Robertson, S. Fletcher, Misses C. McKenny and H. Card. An apology for absence was received from Mr W. Britland. The return of patients at the institutions controlled by the board for January was as follows, the figures for the corresponding month of last year being given in parentheses: Masterton hospital: In hospital on December 31, 106 (99); admitted during January 150 (133); total under treatment, 256 (232); discharged, 136 (127); In hospital on January 31, 120 (105). Daily average, 111.26 (107.58). Pahiatua hospital: In hospital on December 31, 24 (19); admitted during month, 50 (38); total under treatment 74 (57); discharged, 50 (37); in hospital on January 31, 24 (20). Daily average 20. Greytown hospital: In hospital on December 31. 27 (24); admitted during January, 74 (51); total under treatment 74 (75); discharged, 47 (48); in hospital on January 31, 27 (27). Daily average, 26.1 (25.5). There were 59 inmates in the Buchanan Home on January 31 compared with 54 at the corresponding date last year. The Matrons of the Masterton, Greytown and Pahiatua hospitals, submitted routine reports for the past month. Collections of patients’ fees for the period April 1 to January 31 were as follows, the figures for the corresponding period of 1937-38 being shown in parentheses:— Masterton Hospital, £4720 (£4188); GLeytown Hospital, £3678 (£2715); Pahiatua Hospital. £lO6O (£1089); other hospitals, £403 (£531); District Nurses: Masterton £63 (£32); Eketahuna, £22 ( —).. The aggregate collections were greater by the sum of £1391 than for the same period of last year, notwithstanding the fact that in some instances the amount received was lower than the proportional estimate.
The Managing-Secretary. Mr Norman Lee. stated that for the period, April 1 to January 31. maintenance expenditure was in excess of receipt by the sum of .£2980 14s 3d. On capital account there was a credit balance of £2454 15s 2d. There was a credit bank balance of £126 5s lOd. Local contributing authorities levies for maintenance and Government subsidy thereon received to January 31 totalled £36.529. Costs for the present year would exceed the amount estimated on account of additional staffs and increased wages.
