TENSION IN SYRIA

PROTEST RESIGNATION OF GOVERNMENT MISSIONS LAW UNPOPULAR. ' TROUBLE OVER MANDATE. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright JERUSALEM, February 20,. French troops throughout Syria are ready for action after the resignation of the Syrian Government as a protest against the French promulgated law allowing religious missions. Riots and anti-French demonstrations occurred in the weekend. Five deaths are reported. The underlying cause of the trouble is France’s' refusal to release Syria from a mandate which was due to expire on January 1, 1940, but has now been extended indefinitely in view of Italian aspirations and propaganda.
