FINE DISPLAY IN QUEEN STREET PHYSICAL FITNESS CAMPAIGN. BIG GATHERING LAST NIGHT. A most unusual scene was witnessed in Queen Street last night when portion of the thoroughfare was roped oft and the area given over to a display of gymnastics, physical drill, wrestling and basketball, in furtherance of the Keep Fit Campaign. The proceedings were watched with interest and evident enjoyment by a large gatheiing of spectators, who showed consideiable enthusiasm. The displays, which were under the able control of Messrs J. A. Kennedy and F. Price, opened with physical drill by the Wairarapa College Cadets, and the co-ordination and smartness with which the lads carried out various excersises occasioned favourable comment. Following the physical drill, a basketball match between Wairarapa College and a team styled the Rest worked the crowd into a high pitch of excitement and the barracking could be heard blocks away. In a most energetic game, which was under the control of Miss O. R. Sutherland, the Rest won by 5 goals to 2. The following were the teams: College' Misses R. Edwards (captain), P. Baskville, V. Hendry, M. McLaren J. Gemmell, I. Shoosmith, E. McLaren, M. Carroll N. Wilson (retired hurt) and C. Shearer, reserve. The Rest: Misses P. Kilmister (captain), M. Eastwood, A. Burgess, M. Hourigan, E. Jones, B. Sitt. M Brady, P. Hanley, E. Talbot. A fine display of exhibition wrestling followed, the contests being of a high standard. Various holds were shown, and were later exploited in the bouts. The following took part:—Messrs Edwards, Tozer, Leigh, Wickens H. Hill and R. Sutherland. The enthusiastic spectators were then treated by a squad from the Y.M.C.A. gymnasium to an impressive exhibition of vaulting anc displays on parallel bars. Against such an unusual background an excellent effect was secured.' The concluding display was a fast exhibition of men’s basketball, and the crowd was kept on its toes throughout, though the lighting was hardly suitable for good goal throwing. A Mormon team showed a splendid knowledge of the finer points of the game. The final score was 12/8 in favour of the Rest. Elder D. Handy and Mr A. E. Bates were the umpires. TODAY’S EVENTS.
