The Federal Prime Minister (Mr J. A. Lyons) in a National broadcast, said: “As long as the present disturbed slate on international relations persists. Australia will be in a position of danger. Our safety can best be guaranteed by continuing as we ar,e. doing with an extensive defence programme. If the Democracies stand fast and united in their policy of rearmament to resist aggression.' there is hope for the world.” Mr Heffron, leader of the Heffron State Labour Party, in his first public statement on defence, said he supported the proposed large Federal expenditure on defence, provided it was properly directed. The New South Wales State Government has advised the military authorities that it is willing to reorganise its programme of public works in order to begin the construction ■ of railways, roads and other urgent military works.
