CRICKET IN WELLINGTON
KNOCK OUT COMPETITION. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Saturday’s northerly gale caused scoring to be surprisingly low in the knock-out senior competition begun by the Wellington Cricket Association in the afternoon. Against Wellington, University compiled 123, Wellington replying with 126. J. R. Sheffield and T. A. Harpur put on 113 runs in 56 minutes for the first wicket in University’s second innings, and th£y were still together When stumps were drawn at 6.30. Sheffield gave a glimpse of his best Essex form in scoring 87 hot out. He reached his half-century in 16 minutes, and hit 37 off three overs from Blundell, finding the bouhdai-y 12 times in a brilliant display. Harpur was left unbeaten with 25 to his credit. Good bowling by R. O’Neill, who took six wickets for 50 runs, and brilliant wicketkeeping by E. W. Tindill, who caught five batsmen ahd stumped one, saw Midland dismiss KaiVri for 174. M. BroWhe, Who scored 64, was the only Karori batsman to shape confidently. Midland, at stumps had six wickets down for 67 runs. Wellington College Old Boys scored 204 against Kilbirnle. Kilbirriie started badly, but a good stand by O. Wrigley (55 not out) and S. Ward (41 not out) enabled the side to end the day with 126 for five wickets. The feature of Institute’s 214 against Hutt was the even century scored by A. Lang ih 126 minutes. Hutt had 79 runs on for the loss of three wickets When stumps were drfiwn.
