“THE OLD TIMERS”
SOME CRICKET RECORDS. SENSATIONAL BATTING. (By "Blue and Gold.”) In connection with the “old timers" match on the Park Oval on Tuesday afternoon next it is interesting to note that some of the players were very prominent cricketers in their young days, and participated in many sensational and high-scoring matches. For instance on January 27, 1912, Tom Jordan (who will captain one of the teams) and Bill Redmond put on 283 for the first wicket for Masterton seniors against Carterton seniors, this probably still being the New Zealand record for the first wicket in a senior championship fixture. Tom Jordan scored 112 of the runs. On March 24, 1912, the Masterton Club in a match against the Bush team, hit up 389 runs for 4 wickets in 2| hours, of which Tom Jordan accounted for 50. The latter and Bill Redmond put on 113 for the first wicicet. On February 3. 1912, in a match against Carlton, the Masterton seniors compiled 534. Of these Tom Jordan got 32 and Charlie Perry (who will be one of the umpires on Tuesday) 116. Charlie Perry, and the late Dave Logan put on 214 for the fifth wicket which is a record for the Wairarapa in senior championship cricket as is the 534. Charlie Perry, who first played senior cricket in 1880—59 years ago — scored the first century ever made in Wairarapa senior championship cricket —110 against Greytown in February. 1899—exactly 40 years ago. The fastest scoring known in senior cricket in Wairarapa is that of Bill Hoar (another of Tuesday’s players) and Bob Southgate, who added 175 to Carlton’s score in threequarters of an hour in a senior match in February, 1914. Bill Hoar reached 103. Carlton compiled 355 runs in two hours, which is also the fastest scoring record for a senior team in the Wairarapa in a championship match. Bill Hoar has many fast scoring totals to his credit. Les Smart, of Carterton, who will play in George Wilson’s team on Tuesday, was one of the finest bats in the Wellington province. He was a prolific scorer of runs and has notched many centuries. In 1908 he compiled 135 for Carterton against the strong Masterton senior eleven, and seven years later was still scoring centuries, rattling up 149 in 21 hours in one senior game.
