NORTH v SOUTH CRICKET. (“Times-Age” Special.) The following will represent the South in a match with the North at Mangamaire tomorrow: —W. Twentyman, P. Kendall, W. Jensen, R. Signal. E. Mattson, F. Robinson, H. Higginson. P. Payne, R. Payne, W. Leith. R. Mountjoy. Emergency: J. Ma bey. I t Cruelty to Heifer.
At the S.M. Court before Mr 11. P. Lawry, S.M., John Horace Fargher and another youth, whose name was ordered to be suppressed (being treated as a juvenile offender) were jointly charged that on January 9. at Eketahuna, they cruelly ill-treated a Jersey heifer by tying it to a gate post with a rope and slip-knot around the neck thereby causing it unnecessary suffering. They were also charged with cruelly illtreating a Jersey heifer by binding it with ropes to the floor of a motor truck in such a manner as to cause it unnecessary suffering. Fargher was fined £1 with 10s costs on the first count and £lO with 10s costs on the second. The Magistrate admonished and discharged the second defendant saying he was not old enough to appreciate the consequences of his actions. Women’s Institute. At the first meeting of the year of the Nireaha Women's Institute there was a fair attendance, Mrs Petersen presiding and extending a welcome to all members. Mrs Baucke gave a demonstration on smocked aprons and Mrs Goggin on hairpin work, all members showing keen interest and some trying their skill. The thanks of this Institute are due to these two ladies. A competition arranged by Mrs Mills was won by Mrs Duncan. The competition for the piece of needlework done when a girl resulted: Mrs Duncan 1. Mesdames Blewett and Wilkins 2, Mesdames Petersen. Blewett and Mills 3. The best bloom competition resulted: Mrs Petersen (dahlia) 1, Mesdames Mills (gladioli), Cadwallader (stock), and Petersen (dahlia) 2. Mesdames Blewett (petunia). Brown (carnation) and Wilkin (calendula) 3. The hostesses for the March meeting will be Mesdames Drysdale and Cadwallader. Burnt by Caustic Soda. An unforeseen accident with rather serious consequences befell Mrs lan McKenzie, of Hamua. recently. A tin of caustic soda fell from a shelf and some of the scattering contents fell on her head. With her hands, which happened to be wet at the time, she brushed it. but the damp caused the caustic to become active and it burnt deeply into her scalp. Mrs McKenzie is now an inmate of the Tarartia Private Hospital. where she is receiving treatment. The infant son of Mr and Mrs Harold Baillie also had a mishap with caustic soda a few days ago having his face severely burned.
