BUDGET PROSPECTS

MINISTER’S ANTICIPATION. POSSIBILITY OF SLIGHT SURPLUS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, February 16. The possibility of a slight surplus in he Budget was revealed today by the Minister of Finance, Mr Nash. The Minister said income tax was expected to produce a little less than the Budget estimate of £9.500,500, but revenue from Customs duty, sales tax and beer duty was likely to exceed the estimates. Mr Nash said he did not consider the effects of the import control system would be apparent to any considerable extent in the current quarter. They would, however, operate throughout the coming financial year. The Minister forecast an earlier Budget than usual this year, probably about mid-July. Parliament was expected to assemble in June.
