BRITAIN AND THE WAR IN SPAIN EARLY TERMINATION DESIRED. STATEMENT BY PREMIER. (Britlsn Official Wireless., RUGBY, February 15. Asked in ihe House of Commons today whether the British Government was willing to take active steps to secure a settlement of the Spanish war on the basis that all foreign troops should be withdrawn, that there should be no reprisals and that the Spanish people should have an opportunity of choosing the future form of their Government, Mr Chamberlain said: “The British Government is most anxious to see a termination of the war in Spain without further bloodshed and will keep in touch with both sides in case its services are desired to bring them together.” The Government, however, did not consider it advisable at present to take the responsibility of sponsoring any particular terms of settlement. RECOGNITION OPPOSED TELEGRAM FROM OXFORD PROFESSORS. GOVERNMENT'S REPORTED HOPE. (Independent Cable Service.) (Received This Day, 10.10 a.m.) LONDON, February 16. Forty-two Oxford professors and tutors have telegraphed Viscount Halifax, urging Britain not to recognise General Franco while the Republican Government holds territory and Italian and German troops remain in Spain. The “Evening Standard" says England and France are delaying recognition of General Franco in the hope that the Republican President, Don Manuel Azana, will issue a proclamation to the Republic announcing the end of resistance and advising surrender to General Franco.
