t WELLINGTON WOOL SALE AN EXCELLENT CLEARANCE. PRICES ON PAR WITH JANUARY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Keen bidding within generally rigid limits and an excellent clearance at prices about on a par with those of the January auction were the main features of the third Wellington wool sale of the 1938-30 scries which was held yesterday. Spirited competition, which was well maintained right through the sale, was evidence of a strong demand for wool from all sections of the trade. Yorkshire and the Continent were again the mainstays of the market, their representatives taking a large proportion of the offering. Some orders- for Japan were also filled. New Zealand mills were buyers of lambs' wool and crossbreds suitable to their requirements. The sale was fast and noisy, the bulk of the offering of 24,300 bales being JT' cleared when the luncheon adjournment was taken, leaving only one catalogue to be sold in the afternoon. Growers’ -valuations showed that they were generally prepared to meet the market. Passings were few and far between, and a clearance of 96 per cent of the offering was made. OFFICIAL REPORT. The following official report of the sale was issued by the Wellington Wool Brokers’ Association: — At the third Wellington wool sale catalogues comprising approximately 24,300 bales were submitted to a full and representative bench of buyers. Competition, throughout the sale was exceptionally keen. Bradford and the Continent were operating freely and it is also thought that a quantity was bought for Japan. America was operating sparingly. Prices can be quoted practically on a par with those of the January sale. , The offering comprised mostly topmaking wools of average types, with very few outstanding clips. As was the case with the January offering, many of the clips offered showed signs of the effects of the weather and were discoloured. Many clips were carrying dust. The bulk of the wool consisted of crossbreds drawn from the Manawatu and the Wairarapa districts, with the usual quota of balfbreds from Marlborough and Nelson. Prices for bellies and pieces were fully firm on those ruling at the Wellington sale on January 9, good crutchings were slightly easier, while inferior and seedy sorts showed a slight appreciation. There was a good demand for lambs’ wool and here again the better types were fully firm on January.
