“PUBLIC ENEMY NO. I”
TAXI-DRIVERS VICTIMISED. OFFENDER SENT TO GAOL . (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH. This Day, Alleged to have victimised foiir taxidrivers to a total extent of £1 17s, Edward de Malmanche appeared before Mr Levvey, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court this morning. He pleaded guilty. Detective-Sergeant Sinclair said that de Malmanche had hired taxis, giving talsd names and addresses. “Alnohgst the taxi-drivers,” said Detective-Ser-geant Sinclair, “he is in American pailaiice. Public Enemy No. 1.” Do Malmanche was sentenced to six months' imprisonment with hard labour, to be followed by eighteen months’ reformative detention.
