The Chinese have launched a great offensive on the Hunan front, throwing a quarter of a million > troops equipped, with new artillery and mechanised units against 40.000 Japanese, whom they attacked with bayonets, says the Hong Kong correspondent of the "Daily Telegraph." The Chinese inflicted heavy losses, and in addition to capturing hundreds of prisoners and much war material, advanced several miles. BIG CHINESE FORCES REGULARS SAID TO NUMBER TWO MILLIONS. AGAINST 300,000 JAPANESE. (Independent Cable Service.) HONG KONG. February 14. It is estimated a force of only 300.000 Japanese south of Manchukuo are fac' ing 2.000,000 regulars and 1,000.000 more guerilla troops inside their own lines. The reorganised Chinese air force also took the initiative for the first time today, bombing and machine-gunning Japanese trenches.
