SERIOUS SCRUB FIRE
IN STOKES’S VALLEY. DWELLING HOUSE IN DANGER. Last night fire swept through.' several hundred acres in Stokes’s Valley, destroying a quantity of valuable timber and several hundred pounds' worth of fencing. A house on the top of the ridge on the south side of the valley, occupied by Mrs Page, narrowly escaped destruction, the flames reaching within 100 yards of the dwelling, but fortunately firefighters were able to divert the course of the fire. The outbreak was still blazing at a late hour last night. SERVICES RESTRICTED. AS THE RESULT OF THE FIRE. As the result of the fire in Stoke’s Valley telephone and telegraph communications between the Wairarapa and Wellington were restricted this morning. For several hours this morning only one telephone line was available between Masterton and Wellington, but by 10 a.m. two circuits wore in commission. Although actual communication was not lost with Wellington, there was considerable interference to the telegraph service from Masterton. Featherston could not connect with Wellington by telephone until 9.55 a.m. when one line was available. Telegraph communication between Featherston and Wellington was restored at 9.40 a.m.
