HOUSEWIFE’S NOTEBOOK
If chillies are unobtainable when making sauces, pickles, etc., use a small quantity of cayenne pepper. Heat marks on plates can be completely removed by rubbing with a cork dipped in salt. Dampen the salt and rub well.
Lamp shades that have been pensioned off can be made into excellent food-covers. Simply strip off the old material and substitute butter muslin. It is wise to wear thin rubber gloves when washing silk stockings. It removes the danger of “ladders” from finger-nails and rough bits of skin. Do not put sheets through the wringer after the last rinse. Hang out on the line straight from the blue water, and they will be beautifully white.
When leaving home for several days put some metal polish on taps and other metal. fittings and do not rub it off. On your return a rub with a soft cloth will reveal them bright and shining.
