COUNTY AFFAIRS

MEETING OF MAURICEVILLE COUNCIL. CONTROL OF NOXIOUS WEEDS. (“Times-Age" Special.) The monthly meeting of the Mauriceville County Council was held yesterday. Those present were Mr E. W. Chectham (chairman) and Councillors D. Bennett. C. Welch and A. Gray. Leave of absence was granted to Councillors A. Forsberg and R. Judd. A financial report was submitted and received and general accounts totalling £538 were passed. A credit balance of £229 13s 4d was reported. The Clerk. Mr A. W. G. Rollings. reported the completion of an accident compensation claim. The chairman reported that he had interviewed the Main Highways road engineer in regard to a proposal to seal a portion of Highway No 443 from Mauriceville Railway Station to beyond the level crossing north of Mauriceville School. Particulars had been sent to the Main Highways Board for approval as the matter was urgent, the contractors finding it necessary to get the matter fixed up. the plant being available in the district and it being desirable not to keep it idle. The chairman’s action was approved and the Clerk was directed to communicate with the Mauriceville Dairy Co in regard to proposals to seal a small piece of land belonging to the company in front of the factory. The clerk was directed to communi-cate-with certain settlers at Putara as to what steps should be taken if they were desirous of transferring to the jurisdiction of Eketahuna County. The inspector of noxious weeds wrote that the work of controlling noxious weeds is receiving all the attention it is possible to give with a depleted stall but a special endeavour will be made to concentrate on the weeds in this county. 1 , . Mr Frank Parry wrote expressing his appreciation to the council for its prompt action in constructing the groyne adjacent to his property. . The Counties’ Association advised a slight alteration in the procedure and payment for legal opinions issued by the association, impressing upon the council that all cases of local and not national importance must be refen cd to the council’s own solicitor. I The clerk reported that he had forwarded to the secretary of the Centennial Committee exhaustive information regarding the incorporation and personnel of Ahe county since 1899. and the secretary had acknowledged the same with thanks. The Transport Department requested the opinion of the council as to whether more restrictions should be placed upon the use of motor cycles. It was considered, in view of the large number of accidents occurring through motor cycles that licences should not be granted to riders under 21 years of age and that pillion riding should be forbidden entirely, also that there should be a speed limit not exceeding 30 miles an hour on gravel surfaces. , X- . , The overseer reported satisfactory progress of work, chiefly on the highways and prospective operations were discussed and arranged for.
