(By
“The Cynic.”)
Royal Chief was made favourite for the James Hazlett Gold Cup at Dunedin on Saturday in what was a good betting race, apart from Atua Rere. They broke away with Atua Rere, ridden to the front, being joined by Top Row with a close field. Queen of Song was last when well in line for home. Wild Chase and Royal Chief moved up on the outside, and Queen of Song drew up on the rails. A good finish home resulted in Royal Chief beating Queen of Song by a neck. As the stayer of the field, more use with Queen of Song might have more seriously troubled the winner. There were one or two dissatisfied spectators noisy at the result. Before the race, the trainer, F. D. Jones, made a statement to the stewards in connection with Royal Chief that he expected the horse to improve as a result of his race on the first day. A Return to Form. Benefited by his recent racing, Scotland showed a return to form by outstaying the opposition in the Rotorua Cup on Saturday and scoring easily. Kena ran his best race for some time and finished well. Star Artist attempted to lead all the way, and at the halfmile was closely attended by Forest Acre, Te Hai, Black Musk, Sergia and Miss Appellant, with Scotland and Kena moving forward from the back. The field closed on the leader at the distance, but Scotland, securing a run on the inside, quickly placed the issue beyond doubt and was going away. Star Artist was right up fourth, followed by Sergia, Forest Acre and Dutch Girl. The favourite Sergia was well placed in the; eary running, but was beaten before turning for home. Black Musk looked a possibility at the turn, but did not finish as well as expected. The topweight, King Rey, was always in the rear, and Anion and Dutch Girl had their chances spoilt by losing a lot of ground at the start. .
