PRIME MINISTER’S MESSAGE
GOOD WISHES EXTENDED TO DISTRICT Need of Ajhrowd Increase ii» Production EXPANSION QF DOMINION INPUSTRIE3 T 4M pleased to leant that the “Wairarapa Times-Age” i» bringing out a special Agneultuial and Pastoral issue on'the occasion of the animal Jlasterton Show. I trust that the rich Wairarapa district will continue tn flourish and expand and that the Show will provide further evidence of the progressive spirit
which has always characterised that district. Despite all preoccupations with our own personal affairs and interests, the future of our country is a matter which all 7 of us; have at heart. While the people may delegate the directtask of administering the affairs pf the country to the Qpyernmept of the day, in the long rup it is the collective effpyts of the people themselves which make for the success of any policy the Government may attpiyipt to carry put. The Government which I have the bpilpur to lead first and foremost to improve the sttipdflpd of Hvipg for all New Zealqpders. We ape convinced that it is not possible to lift the standard under the old ecpflonyp systejn pf “gp ps yoyt please and thp Devil take the hipclpipsf.” Wp nwst have a clear idea of what should lie done and hPW it is tP dpne. In this country we have got to enspre tlfflt nipre and mpre gopds are produced to meet our wants and our needs. It. is essential that we should increase production. This 1’ 1 ii j _ . 4-1 .>iwl iniiniilnfthunnn l Tn
applies both to primary production and manufacturing’. in the ptjsf New Zealand has depended op expanding fprpt p r °- / ductipn pnd on expanding markets overseas. This h<]s had the effect of developing our rich farm lands; at the same time it has meant that we have been more subject than most other countries to alternate bppms and slumps; with grpilt pOYprty and unemployment. In the past falling overseas prices have beep allqwed Ip affect New Zealand far top much, apd we must realise that unless we have soine control oyer our trade aud production we just cannot protect ourselves. In the past when overseas prices fell we have had to go without goods fppip overseas; we. have not been able to supply them frqin pur own production. That conditions of affairs must be altered; obviously we must make as many- of these gpods as possible for ourselves. It is in the interests of all, both country and town dwellers, to see to it that New Zealand industries are in a position to supply our needs. (Signed) Al. J. SAVAGE, / Prime Minister.
