Views on Racing Facts and Fancies WAKA SCORES WELCOME WIN

(By

“The Cynic.”)

A welcome win was that secured by Waka last Saturday, as he had run several really good races without much luck, and he had taken in two trips to Trentham also. Waka is a five-year-old gelding by Tractor from Caligo, who was by Tribulation from Duckshot, by Torpedo —Eider, by Quilt —Kotuku, by Musket from Maid of Athol. Caligo is the dam of Luna Lux and of Prima Lux, the latter being the dam of Conveyer, who, like Waka, is by Tractor. Except for one race when he was a three-year-old, Waka has been trained always by A. J. Martin, who took him over some months ago for his owner, Mr R. McDougall, of the Wairarapa. He may be tried as a jumper later on —his breeding indicates great possibilites in that direction —but in the meantime, he should be capable of gaining more successes on the flat.

Unlucky. Wine Card was unlucky in the Craven Plate. She was away fairly well, and was doing all expected of her when she ran into trouble about the half-way mark and lost a length or two. The set-back seemed to be sufficient to have cost her the race, as she went very fast at the finish to be beaten into third place by half a length and a head only. She was ridden by A. Stokes, claiming the 71b allowance, and the apprentice handled her perfectly, as she is a mare who has to be kept back right to the last moment, and he had ridden hei’ to the letter, until she got the back wash of a little interference. St Grace. St Grace, a Defoe —Santa Anna two-year-old filly, who had been inclined to whip round in the track, did the same thing at the start of the Lyttelton Plate last Saturday, and she did not take any part in the race. Mathiola, who was to have made his first appearance in public at Riccarton last Saturday, may have his debut delayed until Easter as he developed muscle soreness and he had to be eased up. Likes Easy Going. Passaform was one of the many horses which did not appreciate the hard ground at Trentham, and, if as indications suggest, the. Wingatui course will be hard, the Balboa three-year-old may still be found racing below his best. On the other hand, a track with the sting out of it would see Passaform show the form expected of him lately. Lameness. Night Hawk continued to show marked lameness when first brought out for trotting exercise, and this has caused him to miss his Riecarton and Wingatui engagements. Splints arc the cause of the trouble, but they are taking longer to disappear than was at first anticipated. First Race. Stretto will probably have her first outing on her present trip to Australia in the C. F. Orr Stakes, of £lOOO, at the Williamstown Racing Club’s meeting on Saturday. The Orr Stakes is run over a mile and 55 yards at weight-for-age, with penalties and allowances. Disdain is also due to make her first appearance on Saturday. For West Australia. The Defoe —Oread colt sold after the recent sales for 800 guineas was purchased on behalf of Messrs S. J. and N. V. Mills, prominent Perth business men, who had an excellent innings with another Defoe colt. Footmark, last season. Footmark failed to win in Victoria during the recent spring, but he was probably raced just too soon and he is likely to come up better after his present holiday.

Rode Eleven Winners in Two Days. The Wairoa meeting was the scene in 1907 of a great riding feat, W. Kirk, now training at Ellerslie, being successful in riding 11 winners out of 12 mounts. On the first day, after falling in the opening race, Kirk won the other seven races, and then on the second day came out to pilot a further four winners. The 11 races were won on only four horses. Banker, owned by Mr R. Smyth, Wairoa, won a double each day, and the other winners, owned by Mr E. J. White, Porangahau, were Oakbourne (three), Linkless (two) and Waiheke (two). 1 Light Exercise. Lady Leigh after a short spell on the easy list, is doing a little exercise again, but she will not be required for racing before the autumn. But for her abnormal knee, this fine-looking mare would be a brilliant performer. Considering her disability it is a wonder that Lady Leigh has got even so far. Raced Well. Rex Maitland, having his first race since the early spring, performed most satisfactorily in the Trial Stakes at Riccarton last Saturday, and he should not be long in reaching the winning list. He began very smartly, and was disputing the lead nearly all the way, but as he was short of a race, he failed slightly over the concluding stages and was beaten into third place.
