First English Lifeboat.

Mr H. E. Greathead was surprised the other day to find the caption on a cigarette card handed to him had reference to his great-grandfather, and which read as follows: “The first English lifeboat was built in 1789 by George Greathead. After many constructional changes there are now two main types—the self-righting and the non self-righting. Both types are fitted with 10 to 16 oars and with sails. The former has a heavy iron keel and airtight boxes at bow and stern which enable her to right herself at once when capsized. The latter relies on greater beam and general construction not to capsize.”

George Greathead built his original lifeboat for £l5O. A lifeboat today costs between £4500 and £14,000. There were not half a dozen stations a hundred years ago; now there are more than 200 in the area controlled by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.
