RACING CLUB AFFAIRS. MONTHLY MEETING OF STEWARDS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Carterton Racing Club was held in the P. and A. Society’s Room last night, Mr W. Howard Booth (president) being in the chair. There were also present: Messrs L. H. Smart, W. C. Deller, J. Johnson, C. Jensen, Geo. Paton, E. Matson, P. Bain, A. O. Abbott, J. C. Harp and the secretary (Mr ,J. B. Bairstow). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs R. G. Kemble, Geo. A. Vincent, C. Reid and V. L. Robinson. The treasurer reported that the receipts since the last meeting amounted to £64, and that the bank balance debit was £9lB. Accounts amounting to £43 12s 5d were passed for payment.

The Commissioner of Taxes wrote in reply to the club’s letter in regard to the income tax assessed, and' notified that the same had been withdrawn.

Messrs Merrett and Fox wrote agreeing to conduct the totalisator at the next race meeting at a small advance on last year’s price. The action of the chairman and Mr Smart in accepting the terrns was endorsed.

Messrs N. R. Cunningham and Co., Masterton, wrote offering their broadcasting plant at a reasonable fee for race day. It was resolved that Messrs Booth and Eaton get in touch with Messrs Cunningham and Co. at the Masterton Show with power to act and arrange in connection with the music. Messrs T. and W. Young wrote in regard to the promised trophy to be allocated to the Wairarapa County Cup race, stating that the same would be forwarded to the club after necessary engraving had been completed. The Labour Department, Masterton, wrote notifying that it would be necessary for the caretaker of the course to join a union, it was reported that this had been attended to. The stewards were allocated to various positions on the course on race day.

It was resolved that the fence leading from the course to the totalisator house be removed now that there was only one enclosure, and that it be erected on the western side of the totalisator house up to the railway boundary fence. The matter of obtaining an ambulance for race day was left with the secretary to arrange. It was decided that complimentary tickets be sent , out at, the. discretion of the secretary. The secretary was instructed to interview ’ the secretary of the Trotting Club in the matter of some compensation to the Racing Club for certain improvements arranged for the trotting meeting that was cancelled, and report to ’ ' ■ It as decided that the floors of two buildings on the grounds be covered with, concrete an*d that other improvements be carried into effect. The New Zealand Racing Conference wrote in connection with interference in races and pointing out that the executive was determined to check it. If a Judicial Committee dismissed a charge laid by a stipendiary steward under Rule 289, the president, it was stated, may order an appeal to the District Committee and if necessary to the judge under Rule 57. In regard to the broadcasting of races on racecourses the stewards of all clubs are to instruct the person broadcasting to refrain from giving the placed horses until after the finish of the race and the judge has hoisted the numbers. It must be obvious to all stewards that it was disconcerting to a judge to have the placed horses being broadcast before he has actually judged the finish of the race.

It was resolved to employ a capable person and one who is conversant with horses and racing to broadcast the races as they- are run.
